Wonderful Mexican food at excellent prices at this homestyle fonda.
Fonda Los Jarritos is a fonda: a small, mom-and-pop restaurant that serves down-to-earth standards at very affordable prices.
Though fondas take on a variety of forms these days, they can oftentimes feel like you’re eating in someone’s home. And sometimes you actually are.
At Fonda Los Jarritos, that’s just the case: owners Sandra Hinojosa and her husband, Max Macías Arceo, live in the back of the building. Out front, they serve great homecooked tacos, lonches, tortas ahogadas, burritos, hamburgers and a few other items. For breakfast, there are chilaquiles, eggs, molletes and other dishes.
They also serve bírria and pozole on the weekends. And on weekdays there’s a daily blue plate special that includes agua fresca for around $75 pesos. Sometimes that turns out to be mole with chicken, gorditas, a soup, beef strips with cactus or whatever Sandra feels like whipping up that day.
Fonda Los Jarritos gets its name from the little clay jars, called jarritos, that hang in strands throughout the restaurant. It’s located where Ricki’s Japanese & Thai Food restaurant used to be just north of the highway in Ajijic on Marcos Castellanos.
