Play chess outside at the plaza on Sunday afternoons or teach kids how to play chess on Saturdays at the Lake Chapala Society.

Huarachess Chess Club meets weekly for games on the plaza, plus they do a weekly chess tutoring session for kids.

The club meets on Sundays outside on the north side of the Ajijic plaza between 1:00-3:00 p.m. Bring your own chess set if you have one, otherwise there are usually enough boards available for players. Any level of experience is welcome, from complete beginner to master-levels. There is no cost.

If you are looking for volunteer opportunities and you’d like to teach chess to kids, Huarachess holds a kids chess club at the Lake Chapala Society on Saturdays from 12:00-1:30 p.m. Only basic knowledge of chess is required if you want to help out for an hour or ninety minutes.

There is usually some teaching and exchanging of ideas during the Sunday club meetings at the plaza, too.

The club has expanded its outreach by mentoring children, providing them with English and art classes, and even enrolling them in trade schools.

The club’s president is Roberto Serrano, owner of Plazapato Shoes For Life.
